Window Maintenance in Spring and Autumn: Seasonal Checklist

September 22, 2025

Proper window maintenance keeps your home warm, efficient, and comfortable. Spring and autumn are the best times to inspect and service your windows — after harsh weather changes, small preventive actions can save costly repairs later.

In Spring

After winter, windows often accumulate dirt and moisture damage.

  1. Clean frames and glass thoroughly using a mild cleaner to remove dust, salt, and grime.

  2. Check seals and gaskets — cold can make rubber brittle; replace any that are cracked or hard.

  3. Lubricate hinges and locks with silicone spray or light oil to ensure smooth operation.

  4. Inspect the glazing — if you notice fog or condensation between panes, the seal may be compromised.

In Autumn

Before the cold sets in, prepare your windows for the heating season.

  1. Clean drainage channels — leaves and debris can block them, leading to mold and water damage.

  2. Apply silicone lubricant to seals to keep them elastic and frost-resistant.

  3. Test closing tightness — try the paper test; if it slides out easily, adjust the hinges or latch.

  4. Check ventilation settings — micro-ventilation helps prevent moisture and mold in winter.

Seasonal maintenance takes little time but ensures your windows perform perfectly all year round. Clean, lubricated, and well-sealed windows mean better insulation, lower bills, and a more pleasant home environment.
